Matthews Pensions Remedy

Following the "Matthews" Court case, a special category of members of the Firefighters Pension Scheme 2006 was introduced in 2014. This was known as the first Matthews exercise.

Eligibility for additional pension has been extended so we are now carrying out a Second Matthews exercise.  We have been actively contacting individuals who we have identified as being eligible.

However, there may be some people who are eligible who either have not responded to our letters or who have not received a letter.

To be entitled you must have been an on-call / retained firefighter in the following periods:

  • Any date between 7 April 2000 to 30 June 2000 inclusive OR
  • Any date between 7 April 2000 to 30 June 2000 inclusive plus any date between 1 July 2000 to 5 April 2006 inclusive OR
  • Any date between 1 July 2000 to 5 April 2006 inclusive and were eligible to take part in the first options exercise but were not given the opportunity to do so.

Membership is open to all such eligible individuals, this includes:

  • current firefighters
  • Firefighters who have left the service
  • Firefighters who have left the service and are in receipt of a pension, and;
  • Firefighters who have left the service and are in receipt of ill health retirement benefits

What you need to do?

If you have not already been contacted by HIWFRS then please contact the retained pensions inbox – retained.pensions@hantsfire.gov.uk and provide us with the following details:

  • Name
  • Service numbers / employee number (if you have this)
  • Service dates – start and end dates of your employment history (estimates are fine)
  • Any evidence you may have in relation to your service dates, such as contract of employment, P45, P60s (if you have them).

If you meet the eligibility criteria above you will be sent your Expression of Interest Form which you need to complete and return to the Pension inbox above.
