Whether you live in a caravan or mobile home, or you’re just holidaying in one, our safety tips are here to help you stay safe and prepared.  

Staying safe from fire in a caravan or mobile home is just as important as in any other property. Follow these essential tips to protect yourself and others 

 Our top tips for staying safe:  

• If there is a fire, you get out, stay out and call 999. 
• Keep exits clear and plan how you would evacuate in an emergency. 
• Fit smoke alarms in suitable places to avoid false alarms and test them regularly.  
• Install a carbon monoxide (CO) detector.  

Staying aware of everyday hazards can significantly reduce the risk of fire in your caravan or mobile home. The guidance below highlights key safety tips for electrical use, cooking, and the safe handling of candles and smoking materials.

Electrical safety  

• Turn off all appliances before you go to bed
• Don’t overload sockets
• Don’t run electrical cables from one mobile home to another

Outdoor areas can pose fire risks, especially when gas cylinders are in use or fuel is being stored. Use the checklist below to help keep your surroundings safe and reduce the chance of accidents.

Using gas cylinders  

•  Turn off gas cylinders when not in use. 
• Store cylinders six metres store them away from your home and vehicles. 
• Only change gas cylinders when they’re completely empty  

Don’t store fuel under your home or in direct sunlight  

• Make sure the gas pipe connection is secure – If you suspect a leak, turn off the main cylinder valve.  

If you need to call emergency services, it can be difficult for them to find your caravan or mobile home, especially if it’s in a remote or hard-to-describe location.  

To help Fire Control respond quickly and effectively, please provide the following information: 

• The exact address, or clear directions if the location is not obvious. You can also use the What3Words app to pinpoint your location. 
• Let us know if access is difficult for large fire engines – this allows us to send smaller vehicles if necessary. 
• Inform us of any challenges with water supply access at the location. 

Remember to send someone to meet the Fire and Rescue Service when they arrive.
