Candle light safety

Each year, we respond to over 40 fires started by candles. These fires can spread quickly causing serious damage to homes and putting lives at risk. 

The safest choice is to skip real candles altogether and go for battery-powered LED alternatives. They give the same cosy glow without the fire risk. 

But if you do choose to light a candle, here are some simple tips to help keep you, your family, and your home safe:

• Make sure candles are secured in a stable candle holder 
• Always put candles out when leaving the room  
• Never leave children or pets in reach of burning candles  
• Keep candles away from anything that may catch fire like curtains, cards or loose-fitting clothes  

• Wax Melts: Never leave them unattended. Keep away from flammable items and always turn off or unplug the warmer before leaving the room or going to bed. 
• Incense Sticks: Use a stable, heat-resistant holder. Light away from flammable objects, never leave burning incense unattended, and avoid lighting multiple sticks at once.  
• Plug-in Air Fresheners: Turn off before leaving home or sleeping. Unplug weekly to check for signs of damage or overheating. 

If there’s an accident with a candle and your clothes catch fire, don’t run around. Try to remember ‘stop, drop, roll’ – which means:  

1. Stop – don’t run around, you’ll make the flames worse 
2. Drop – lie down on the ground at once 
3. Roll – it makes it harder for the flames to spread.
