From 1st August 2025, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRS) is changing the way it responds to Automatic Fire Alarms in certain buildings. HIWFRS will no longer attend AFAs at commercial premises with no sleeping risk, during the hours of 08:00 and 18:00hrs, except in specific circumstances. 

Use our handy checklist to make sure you’re ready for the changes…

• Review your fire risk assessment and make sure it’s up to date. 
• Notify your alarm management company and any key holders of the changes. 
• Ensure you have an emergency plan in place to safely investigate all AFAs that activate within the premises. 
• In the event of a confirmed fire, ensure you have a process in place to safely evacuate the building and for a person to call HIWFRS (via 999) to confirm a fire has broken out. 
• Notify your employees of the AFA changes in response and ensure they are adequately trained to both prevent a fire and deal with an AFA. 
• Regularly review your fire risk assessment to keep people safe and minimise the effects of any fires. 
• Ensure your fire alarm system is tested weekly. 
• Ensure your fire alarm system remains in good working order and is maintained by a competent person. 
• Ensure all alarm activations are investigated and acted upon so any issues can be resolved as soon as possible. 
• Take steps to reduce false alarms in your premises 

How to deal with a false alarm: 

• Ensure the building is evacuated in accordance with your emergency procedures. 
• When the alarm activates, if possible, two people should investigate.  
• Check the fire alarm panel for information.  
• Ensure a member of staff remains at the alarm panel and keeps in contact with the investigators. 
• Look and smell for smoke, listening for unusual sounds. If it doesn’t feel right, leave the building by the nearest fire exit and dial 999.
