Water & Boat Fire Safety

Spending time near water, at the coast, rivers, lakes, or on boats, can be enjoyable, but it comes with risks. This guide offers key safety tips to help you stay safe around open water, respond in emergencies, and prevent fires on boats. 

Follow these essential tips near beaches, rivers, lakes, and canals: 

• Stick to the paths and stay clear of cliff edges, riverbanks, and mudflats. 
• Know tide times before visiting the coast. 
• Follow any local warning signs 
• Swim only in lifeguarded areas – avoid quarries, reservoirs, and canals. 
• Never leave children unattended near water. 

• Lie on your back in a star shaped. 
• Keep your head above water and breathe slowly. 
• Call for help and raise an arm to signal.

If Someone Falls In 

• Do not jump in. Cold water shock can overwhelm even strong swimmers.
• Call 999 immediately.
• Ask for Coastguard (if at sea) or Fire & Rescue (inland).
• Give your exact location using the What3Words app or nearby landmarks.
• Use rescue equipment like lifebelts or throw lines if available.

Fires on boats can start quickly and spread even faster due to confined spaces and flammable materials like fuel and gas. Faulty wiring and equipment malfunctions also pose serious risks. Being prepared and knowing how to prevent and respond to fires is essential for everyone on board to stay safe.  

Fire Prevention Tips 

• Install smoke and CO detectors in enclosed areas.
• Keep fire extinguishers on board and ensure everyone knows how to use them.
• Regularly check fuel lines, gas appliances, and wiring.
• Never smoke near fuel or inside cabins.
• Ventilate engine compartments before starting, especially after refuelling.
• Never leave cooking unattended.
• Avoid overloading sockets and inspect for worn or damaged cables.

• At Sea: Call the Coastguard via VHF Channel 16 or dial 999.
• In Harbour/Marina: Dial 999 and ask for the Fire Service.
