Stay safe around mud

We’re often called out to assist people who have become trapped in mud along our coastlines and riverbanks. While it might appear harmless, mud can be surprisingly dangerous especially after heavy rain or flooding, when it becomes even more unstable and unpredictable. 

Anyone can get stuck in the mud, but with the right precautions, these incidents are avoidable. If you’re planning a walk near the coast or along riverbanks, take a few simple steps to stay safe and be prepared before you set out. 

• Check ground conditions before walking or driving through muddy areas. 
• Stick to well-marked paths and solid ground whenever possible. 
• Do not attempt to rescue animals or belongings stuck in mud  
• Wear proper footwear with good grip and ankle support. 
• Keep children and pets away from muddy or marshy terrain. 
• Be cautious near rivers, wetlands, construction sites, and farmland after rain. 

• Stay calm and avoid sudden movements. 
• Move slowly to avoid sinking deeper. 
•  Try to lean back and spread your weight to avoid becoming more stuck. 
•  If you’re in danger or can’t free yourself, call 999 immediately. 

• Clearly state the nature of the emergency and your location.
