Barbecue Safety

Barbecues (BBQ) can easily get out of control but by following our safety tips you can reduce this risk. 

• Never leave barbecues unattended 
• Keep a bucket of water, sand or a garden hose nearby in case of emergencies 
• Set up your barbecue on level ground, away from bushes, fences, tents or other structures 
• Be careful when cooking fatty foods, the dripping fat can cause the barbecue to flare up 
• Make sure the coals are cool before you move the barbecue. Once cool, dispose of the ashes safely – never place them in dustbins ​

Here are our top fire safety tips when using a gas BBQ:  

• Make sure your BBQ is correctly serviced, and all joints are tightened, safe and secure. 
• Don’t use a gas BBQ if you suspect a gas leak. You can test for leaks using soapy water and watching for bubbles. 
• Make sure the fire is extinguished when removing the gas valve and that the gas is off before removal. 
• Turn off the gas cylinders before you turn off the barbecue controls, this will stop any gas leaking. 
• Store gas cylinders outside, away from frost and direct sunlight. 

Disposable BBQs bring several risks – from grass fires to harming wildlife. Please be aware of the following: 

• The New Forest National Park in Hampshire has now banned all fires and outdoor cooking equipment, including disposable BBQ’S.  
• When disposable BBQs are not put out properly, they can cause grass fires, especially in hot weather when the ground is dry 
• The ground beneath a BBQ can remain searingly hot for hours after it has been removed, posing a risk to anyone who might walk over it. 
• They pose a threat to wildlife and the environment.
