How to Make an Escape Plan

We recommend that you have a fire escape plan and everyone in your household should be familiar with it. 

Read our advice on how to plan an escape route for your home. 

• The best route is your normal way out, but identify a plan B  
• Ensure all exits to your home are kept clear and clutter free  
• Make sure everyone in the property knows where the door and window keys are kept 
• If you have a visual impairment, use indicators along your escape route to help locate exits. Learn more   
• If you use a mobility aid, ensure its easily accessible along with your phone. 

If you’re unable to leave by your usual exit due to fire or smoke, identify a plan B saferoom: 

• A room at the front of the property where everyone can meet 
• Close the door and block the bottom of the door with bedding to prevent smoke entering the room  
• Open the window wide to breathe in fresh air  

Make sure you know the emergency plan for your building.  Take time to learn and practice your escape route. If you’re unsure what the plan is, contact your building’s owner, landlord or property management for guidance.
