How to contact usOur Early Intervention programme aims to help build stronger, safer communities and promote resilience among young people who may need additional support.
We provide a safe and supportive environment where young people can learn, develop new skills and build confidence outside of the traditional classroom. Through social and personal development, we encourage young people to recognise their strengths, try new things and discover what they can achieve.
At a time when young people may have fewer opportunities to connect and develop in person, our programme provides a space where they can meet others, form positive relationships and grow together.
Through shared activities, discussions and challenges, we encourage young people to step outside their comfort zones, face challenges and develop the confidence, resilience and adaptability they need for the future.
The main aim of the programme is to support you to complete a Level 1 King’s Trust Award in Developing Resilience.
You’ll work alongside other young people and take part in a range of practical activities, team challenges, group discussions and taught sessions. These may include mud and water safety, alcohol and drug awareness, communication challenges, team-building activities, home fire safety, practical firefighting drills, mental health and emotional wellbeing sessions, physical health activities and knife crime awareness.
You’ll also have the opportunity to take part in a one-day activity in the New Forest. This activity is completely free, and transport is provided.
The activity day is a chance to try something different, work as part of a team and build your confidence and resilience. You’ll be encouraged to step outside your comfort zone, take on challenges and recognise what you’re capable of.
We know that every young person and group is different. That’s why our programme doesn’t follow a rigid structure.
We adapt sessions to suit the needs, abilities and interests of each group. We also consider current environmental and risk factors to make sure activities and discussions are appropriate and relevant.
This flexible approach helps us create a safe, inclusive and supportive environment where everyone has the opportunity to get involved, learn new skills and make positive changes.
ne experience that really stands out from the programme was supporting my friends. I would recommend the programme because it provides a safe and supportive environment where you can build confidence, learn new skills and challenge yourself. The programme has helped me develop teamwork, resilience and self-confidence. I originally joined because my mum thought it would be a good way for me to get out of the house, meet new people and build my confidence.
My proudest moment was during Activity Day, when I pushed my limits by taking part in different challenges, including the Leap of Faith. It was challenging, but I was proud of myself for facing my fears and not giving up. It showed me that I can achieve things I never thought I could do. In the future, I would like to get a job doing something outdoors, and this programme has inspired me to work towards that goal. In three words, I would describe my experience as pushing my limits, teamwork and self-confidence.
Please bring a water bottle, a packed lunch and comfortable clothing suitable for practical activities. You’ll also need to wear suitable closed-toe shoes. Snacks and refreshments will be provided throughout the day.
We can accept up to 12 young people on each programme. The programme will usually be facilitated by two of our lead practitioners, with support from two serving firefighters. Our team is experienced in working with young people and will be there to support you throughout the programme.
Our programmes take place across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight at one of our 61 fire stations. One fire station will act as the main base for the full programme. We’ll let you know the location when you’re invited to attend. If the location isn’t suitable or is too far away for you to travel this time, please keep an eye on our social media pages for future programmes taking place closer to you.
The programme runs for eight days over three weeks, with sessions taking place from 10am to 3pm. The New Forest activity day will be longer, running from approximately 8:30am to 5:30pm. Spreading the programme across three weeks helps to minimise disruption to education and other commitments. It also gives you time between sessions to reflect on what you’ve learned and put your new skills into practice.
We welcome young people with a wide range of needs and backgrounds. We want our programme to be accessible and inclusive, with support based on each person’s individual needs. Before the programme begins, you’ll have the opportunity to speak with one of our practitioners about any additional needs, reasonable adjustments or barriers that may affect your participation. We’ll do everything reasonably possible to help you feel comfortable, supported and able to take part.
The safety and wellbeing of every young person is central to our programme. All activities are planned, supervised and delivered by trained staff. Before taking part in practical activities, you’ll be given clear instructions and the appropriate safety equipment. We also want you to feel safe and supported throughout the programme. You’ll have the opportunity to speak privately with a practitioner if you have any worries, additional needs or concerns about taking part.
