Fire extinguished at waste recycling site in Timsbury
We were called to the scene of a fire at a commercial waste recycling site in Timsbury on Friday just before 8pm. At the height of the fire seven fire engines, an aerial ladder platform, and various other support vehicles were in attendance.
Crews attended from Alton, Eastleigh, Fareham, Fordingbridge, Hightown, Redbridge, Ringwood, Romsey, St Mary’s, and Yateley. They used breathing apparatus, hose reel jets and main jets to tackle the blaze within 300 tonnes of building waste.
On-site plant machinery was used to turn over and move the waste. The fire was extinguished, with a stop message issued at 2am.
The Managing Director of Waltet, who operate the site, praised HIWFRS and the on-site team for the helping to avoid a large-scale incident.
The quick response from all involved prevented damage to the onsite plant and other buildings.
Managing Director of Waltet, Mark Howard said:
“I would like to thank the team including two of our night drivers who assisted until the early hours of Saturday morning, and a fantastic job done by our emergency services. “
The cause of the blaze is unknown but potentially was sparked by a carelessly disposed of lithium battery. We have seen a number of fires at commercial waste sites across our area caused by batteries in recent months. Find out more about the dangers of lithium batteries and how you can dispose of them safely and correctly, on our website.
