Lorry trailer destroyed in blaze beneath the Itchen Bridge

A lorry trailer was destroyed in a blaze beneath the Itchen Bridge yesterday evening.

Crews from St Mary’s and Hightown responded to the incident on Oakbank Road at around 7pm, with the HIWFRS Control Room receiving more than 40 emergency calls reporting the fire.

Firefighters in breathing apparatus used hose reels and jets to extinguish the fire before damping down.

Fortunately, no persons were injured, but the fire did spread to nearby vegetation which suffered damaged.

The scene was made safe before HIWFRS handed the incident over to police officers and returned to station at around 8pm.
