Fire at a recycling and landfill site in Newport
Crews from Newport, Sandown, Cowes and Shanklin were alerted shortly after 7pm last night to the fire at a recycling site on Briddlesford Road.
Supported by the Ventnor water carrier, firefighters used breathing apparatus and hose reel jets to tackle the flames that had spread across a number of large refuse bins.
Police closed the road and the incident was scaled down overnight, as Freshwater, Ryde and East Cowes crews took over from the firefighters who were first on the scene.
HIWFRS left the scene after the fire was fully extinguished and dampened down, at around 11am this morning.
