Crews tackle fire at Bishopstoke Restaurant

Firefighters responded to a significant fire at the Toby Carvery in Bishopstoke at approximately 3:40am on 29 December.

The fire, which spread to the roof and first floor of the restaurant, required a swift response. Six fire engines, an aerial ladder platform, four main jets, and two hose reels were deployed to tackle the blaze.

Firefighters worked tirelessly to contain and extinguish the fire ensuring the safety of the surrounding area. The B3037 (Bishopstoke Road/Fair Oak Road) was temporarily closed, and residents were advised to keep doors and windows closed due to smoke in the vicinity.

As the incident progressed, the response was gradually scaled back. Crews worked to identify and extinguish remaining hotspots, carrying out damping down operations to ensure the fire was fully extinguished.

By 1:00 pm, firefighters had confirmed the fire was completely out, with no remaining hotspots. Crews have now left the scene.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, though there are no indications of suspicious circumstances.

HIWFRS Incident Commander Mark Caplen said:

“Our teams were called at 3:40 am this morning to tackle a significant fire at a restaurant in Bishopstoke. Crews worked tirelessly and efficiently to contain the blaze, which had spread to the building’s roof and first floor.

Firefighters are continuing efforts at the scene to identify and extinguish remaining hotspots as part of the ongoing process of turning over and damping down. This work is expected to continue throughout the remainder of the afternoon.

The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time, though there is no indication of suspicious circumstances.”

We have reduced our response to four fire engines as we damp down and check for hotspots. The road has now been reopened.

Incident update at 5.30am:

Crews were called to a fire at the Toby Carvery in Bishopstoke at around 3.45am on 29 December.

Six fire engines and an aerial ladder platform are on scene and four main jets are being used by firefighters to extinguish the fire.

The B3037 (Bishopstoke Road/Fair Oak Road) has been closed in the vicinity of the restaurant while we tackle the fire and people should seek alternative routes.

Due to smoke residents in the area are advised to keep doors and windows closed.
