Busy Bonfire night weekend for Hampshire and Isle of Wight teams

It was a busy weekend for our HIWFRS crews who were called out to a number of bonfire and firework related incidents.

Our Control Room operators were on hand to ensure fire cover was maintained as crews were mobilised to incidents across both Hampshire and Isle of Wight during a notoriously busy period for fire services.

Southsea firefighters were sent to more than twenty incidents across the city, as crews from more than 35 Hampshire and Isle of Wight fire stations tackled various types of call-outs on the evenings of the 5th & 6th November, when large numbers of residents celebrated bonfire night.

Here are some of the incidents which our crews from across Hampshire and Isle of Wight were sent to over the Bonfire night weekend:

Southsea firefighters were called to a small unattended fire in a play park on Benbow Place on Friday evening.

The crew used one hose reel jet to extinguish the blaze, with Hampshire Constabulary colleagues dealing with the youths which had set the fire.

A crew from Hardley were sent to a fire involving a hedge in Holbury which was caused by a firework.

Redbridge firefighters were called to a vehicle fire on Aldermoor Road after fireworks had been thrown into an abandoned car. Police were informed before the crew returned to station.

A crew from Hightown were sent to a field on Summit Way after a firework display had caused a small fire, with one hose reel jet used to prevent the incident from escalating.

Then on Saturday evening, two Southsea fire engines responded to a blaze within a bin store on King Albert Street. The crews found one bin, including a box of unused fireworks, alight before using one hose reel jet to extinguish the fire.

Later in the evening firefighters from Andover, Stockbridge and Eastleigh were joined by colleagues from Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service at a farm in Over Wallop involving two separate seats of fire. The fires affecting the farmyard and an outbuilding were extinguished with remnants of fireworks visible at the scene of both seats.

Firefighters were also called to a number of out of control bonfires, where the crew were required to extinguish the blaze.

Crews responded to several false alarms where they were able to advise members of the public how they could safely put out their bonfire.

Alongside these bonfire-related shouts, our crews were also out responding to other incidents ranging from domestic property fires to road traffic collisions.

Remember if you’re having a bonfire or fireworks to always follow the Firework Code and keep safe.
