Shortly before three o’clock this morning, firefighters were called to a fire involving several vehicles which had spread to an East Cowes home.

Crews from Newport, Cowes and Ryde were on the scene in Kingston Road, wearing breathing apparatus sets, and using hose reels and jets to the tackle the blaze, which is believed to have been caused by an engine fault in one of the vehicles.

Further fire engines from Shanklin and Sandown were mobilised as part of the initial response, but were stood down prior to arrival as they were no longer required.

Local residents were advised to keep doors and windows closed due to the amount of smoke in the area.

The incident was scaled down as remaining firefighters dampened down hotspots and checked over the affected properties.

Fire prevention messages were given to local residents before fire engines left the scene at around half five.
