Two teenagers rescued from underground bunker at Fort Fareham

Firefighters rescued two teenagers after they became trapped approximately 15 feet underground at Fort Fareham on Sunday evening.

Crews were called shortly after 6pm following reports that two teenagers had entered the historic fort and become trapped inside an underground bunker, unable to find a way out.

Firefighters used ropes and a ladder to safely reach the teenagers and bring them back to ground level. Both were successfully rescued and were unharmed.

The incident was handed over to police colleagues at approximately 8pm.

Station Manager Stu Vince said:

“This incident highlights just how dangerous exploring old and abandoned buildings and structures can be. What may appear to be a harmless place to explore can contain hidden drops, unstable floors, open holes and other hazards that can lead to serious injury.

“Thankfully, on this occasion, both teenagers were rescued unharmed, but the outcome could have been very different. We would urge children and young people to stay away from abandoned buildings, forts, bunkers and other derelict structures, and never enter areas that are fenced off or clearly marked as unsafe.

“A moment of curiosity can quickly turn into a serious incident. Staying away from these locations is the best way to help keep yourself and your friends safe.”
