Sprinklers extinguished a fire in a Southampton tower block yesterday afternoon

Firefighters from St Mary’s and Hightown were called to Rotterdam Tower at around half six following a fire on the seventh floor.

A member of the public rescued one casualty from the flat prior to the arrival of HIWFRS, as the sprinkler system operated to extinguish the small kitchen fire.

Further crews from Redbridge, Eastleigh, Totton, Fareham and Botley were stood down.

The casualty was treated for smoke inhalation and discharged at the scene.

Firefighters delivered fire safety messaging to neighbouring properties before leaving the scene shortly after eight o’clock.
