Tanker fire near ferry terminal tackled by Portsmouth crews

Portsmouth crews were called to Gunwharf Road, near to the Wightlink Ferry terminal, shortly after 4am to extinguish a fire involving the rear tyres and brakes of a fuel tanker.

The fire was extinguished with jets and hose reels before firefighters began cooling the tanker and monitoring the temperature.

Southsea, Cosham and Portchester firefighters were supported by the Environmental Protection Unit from Romsey, and worked closely with Police and ferry terminal operators before the incident was scaled down.

Shortly after 8am HIWFRS left the scene as the vehicle had reached a safe temperature and was set to be recovered.
