When it comes to picking a smoke alarm, we always recommend going for a battery powered one. They are available to buy from as little at £10* from most DIY stores and online.
Ideally, look for an alarm with a 10-year sealed battery, as it takes the hassle out of changing batteries. That said, alarms with replaceable batteries are still a good option, just remember to check and change them regularly.
Whichever type you choose, make sure it has the British Standards Kitemark or the European CE mark. These show the alarm meets safety standards and has been properly approved
Fit a smoke alarm on every level of your home, ideally on the ceiling of a hallway and landing.
Smoke alarms should always be mounted on the ceiling, near the middle of the room or hall, and at least 30cm away from a wall or light.
