Crews from Ryde and Shanklin received certificates of appreciation and pin badges from Isle of Wight Ambulance Service (IWAS) on 3rd February, for the fantastic work they do offering cardiac response on the Island.
Firefighters on the Island have been working in partnership with IWAS since December 2022. They have since attended 385 cardiac incidents and have achieved return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) 12 times.
Louise Walker of IWAS, who presented the awards said:
“I’m incredibly proud to support the cardiac arrest scheme here on the Island.
“Every firefighter who attends our patients really does make such a difference.
“The value of working with HIWFRS is immeasurable. We’re so grateful for everyone’s enthusiasm and commitment.”
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service’s cardiac arrest responder scheme on the Isle of Wight has resulted in a faster response to many patients in the local community who require an immediate medical response. Firefighters are able to provide early, good quality CPR while an ambulance is arranged, which provides the patients with an improved chance of recovery.
Station Manager Andy Walford said:
“I have recently moved into the role of Station Manager Medical response, and I have already been overwhelmed by all of the fantastic work our cardiac response stations do.
“It was a pleasure to see how our partner agencies really appreciate the ongoing work our crews do for our communities.
“Thank you, Ryde, and Shanklin your efforts really are appreciated.”
