Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service

The ‘hottest’ job in the county is about to open for recruitment.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight fire and rescue services are looking to recruit wholetime firefighters to keep the communities they serve safe.

The organisation is looking to attract a varied pool of potential applicants and pick the best candidates from all backgrounds and walks of life.

The fire service has been running a series of Have a Go days to help people get hands-on with firefighting equipment and have the chance to ask questions.

Recruitment will open on September 21 at 00.01am and closes at 11.59pm on September 23.

Assistant Director Rob Cole said:

“The role of the modern firefighter is challenging and ever-changing with recruits learning more skills than ever before.

“Putting out fires and cutting people out of cars is, of course, part of the job but we are also looking for people who can communicate vital safety messages and form important relationships in the community.

“This is a fantastic career for anyone with personal development and training that is second to none. With the right motivation you could be managing a station, developing skills specialist skills as a dog-handling or be involved in prevention work.

Live question and answer sessions have also been run to give everyone the best possible chance.

Inclusion and Diversity Manager Leanne Illman said:

“We have worked hard to remove historic barriers that may have previously prevented people from applying.

“We want to see more women and members of the BAME community thinking of the fire service as a great place to work.

“We want to be picking the best people from as wide a pool as possible and better represent and reflect the people we serve.”

Last year the recruitment drive attracted about 800 applicants in 72 hours.
