Two new Fire Cadet units were launched virtually last week in Rushmoor and Southsea creating an exciting new opportunity for young people aged 13-17 in the Rushmoor and Southsea area.
Fire Cadets is a nationally recognised programme that offers young people the chance to gain essential social, life, work and wellbeing skills. It also gives them the opportunity to gain a BTEC Level 2 qualification and develop their confidence and personal skills. Additionally, they learn firefighting techniques, improve their health and fitness and make new friends.
The virtual Fire Cadet sessions featured an overview of what the new Fire Cadet recruits can expect from future sessions along with some fun team-building exercises. Virtual tours of Rushmoor and Southsea Fire Station were also included, so the new recruits can see where they will be based once lockdown restrictions are lifted. Each session also covered support around fitness and mental wellbeing.
Fire Cadet Lead Kayleigh Jones said:
“I’m thrilled that our new Fire Cadet units are now open, albeit virtually, and want to extend a warm welcome to our new recruits and our volunteers who’ve made the new units a reality.
I also want to thank our current Fire Cadets and Fire Cadet volunteers/Instructors for keeping the Fire Cadet programme running virtually for all this time. Everybody has risen to the challenge and adapted so well to the virtual environment.”
An official launch will be held at each site when government guidelines allow.
