Shipping container blaze creates smoke plume over Newport

Firefighters were called to a large shipping container fire in Newport after multiple calls were made to the HIWFRS Control Room.

Crews from Newport, Cowes and East Cowes were sent at 19:23 and found smoke and flames issuing from the container at the back of a car garage on Pan Lane.

The container was destroyed in the blaze, which was extinguished using two main jets, two hose reel jets, four sets of breathing apparatus, an Ultra High Pressure Lance and Positive Pressure Ventilation fans to remove smoke.

After liaising with the owner of the property and police, firefighters left the scene following the stop message at 20:32.
