Firefighters tackle large heathland fire in Blackwater, Camberley

Throughout the night and into the early hours of this morning, crews continued to extinguish remaining hotspots and dampen down the affected area.

Crews are expected to maintain a presence at the scene throughout today while they continue to monitor for any remaining hotspots and ensure the affected area remains safe.

Incident Update – 07:00pm, Saturday 11 July

Multiple fire crews from across Hampshire, supported by colleagues from Surrey Fire and Rescue Service, responded to a large wildfire in Blackwater, Camberley.

The first call reporting the blaze was received by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRS) Control Room shortly after 1:30pm.

At the height of the incident, the fire had spread to approximately 10 hectares of  heathland. Nine fire engines, three water carriers, four Land Rover support vehicles and a range of specialist wildfire vehicles were in attendance. Firefighters used hose reels and specialist wildfire equipment to bring the fire under control and prevent further spread.

Police colleagues closed nearby roads, and members of the public were asked to avoid the area while emergency services worked safely to contain the fire.

A reduced number of crews are expected to remain at the scene overnight to maintain fire breaks, carry out damping-down operations, monitor the incident and extinguish any remaining hotspots.

Initial Incident Information:

More than 60 firefighters are currently tackling a large heathland fire in Blackwater, Camberley.

The first call reporting the blaze was received by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRS) Control Room shortly after 1:30pm.

Crews from Basingstoke, Rushmoor, Hartley Wintney, Odiham, Portchester, Andover, Eastleigh, Fordingbridge, and Surrey Fire and Rescue Service are currently at the scene, using hose reels and specialist wildfire units to bring the fire under control.

The fire is currently estimated to cover around six hectares of heathland.

Road closures are in place. People are asked to avoid the area where possible to allow emergency crews to work safely and effectively.
