Firefighters stop shed and fence blaze spreading to Southampton home

The current hot weather can see small fires spread and grow quicker than you might expect.

Firefighters were alerted to a blaze at a property in Southampton at around one o’clock this afternoon, with the HIWFRS Control Room receiving multiple calls reporting the fire.

Smoke could be seen from some distance as crews approached the scene on Jessamine Road.

Upon arrival, firefighters found two sheds alight, which had subsequently spread onto nearby fence panels, and was heading towards the house.

Jets and hose reels were used to stop the fire which did cause damage to the conservatory, guttering and external fascias.

Firefighters left the scene following the stop message at 14:03.

In the current hot weather we are experiencing, we ask that you think twice before lighting a bonfire, but if you do please follow these guidelines to reduce risk and prevent accidents:

• Use a metal incinerator bin and position it well away from houses, sheds, fences, and trees
• Follow advice on what materials should not be burned
• Always stay with your bonfire and keep water nearby
• Ensure the fire is completely out before leaving; damp thoroughly with plenty of water
