Charging electric bikes have been the cause of two blazes across Hampshire in recent weeks, highlighting the fire service’s warning about the dangers of lithium-ion battery products.

Just this week, a charging electric bike caught alight at a property in Southampton.

Firefighters entered the house to extinguish the lithium-ion battery pack blaze before ventilating the kitchen, lounge and first-floor which were affected by the smoke.

And last month, an electric bike’s battery pack sparked a garage blaze in Aldershot.

The fire, which was out on arrival, created a lot of smoke which was cleared from the building with ventilation fans, and caused a significant amount of damage to surrounding objects.

HIWFRS’ Prevention Manager, Tracey Webb said:

“At this time of year, we know lots of you across Hampshire and Isle of Wight will be out searching for the best gifts to give to your loved ones – we want to ensure those gifts are safe and don’t present a fire risk.

“When buying electrical products such as phones, tablets, e-scooters and other lithium-ion battery devices, we ask that you only do so from reputable retailers, ensuring they meet UK Safety Standards.

“Use the charger your product came with, don’t overload sockets and never leave them plugged in overnight or unattended.”

Residents are also advised to check they have sufficient working smoke alarms in their home.
