Closed door prevents electric heater blaze spreading to rest of Southampton home

A small electric heater sparked a blaze which destroyed a Southampton bedroom on Saturday evening.
The occupant’s wise decision to close the door behind them as they evacuated the home, meant the damage from the fire was limited to the bedroom, with the remainder of the property untouched.
St Mary’s and Hightown crews were alerted at around half seven on Saturday evening to a property on Northam Road.
Smoke and flames were issuing from the ground-floor when they arrived on scene.
One casualty was treated at the scene by South Central Ambulance Service paramedics.
Wearing breathing apparatus sets, firefighters entered the property to extinguish the fire using hose reel jets, before clearing smoke with ventilation fans and conducting a number of home fire safety visits.
HIWFRS left the scene at returned to station at around 9pm.
