Crews battle school blaze on the border of Hampshire and Berkshire
Hampshire and Berkshire firefighters were alerted to a fire at a school in Newtown Common at around midday yesterday.
The initial call into the HIWFRS Control Room reported smoke in the loft, and upon arrival crews found smoke issuing from the rooftop and requested more resources to attend.
Crews from Basingstoke, Whitchurch, Winchester and Royal Berkshire FRS were on the scene, supported by specialist vehicles from Romsey, Rushmoor, Eastleigh and Fleet.
The fire within the three-storey building was bought under control, as firefighters continued to dampen down remaining hotspots with hose reels and jets.
Due to the amount of smoke in the area, local residents were asked to keep windows and doors closed.
Relief crews from Portchester, Liphook, Beaulieu and Hartley Wintney took over from the crews who were first on the scene.
The stop message came in at 19:25 as the incident was scaled down.
Throughout the night reinspections took place to allow firefighters to check for any remaining hotspots.
