City-centre crane fire stopped by Southampton crews
Southampton crews stopped a fire involving the motor unit of a tower crane 38-metres high yesterday afternoon.
Smoke was issuing from the crane situated in the city centre, just off of the main high street on Hanover Buildings, at around about half four.
Specialist rope rescue firefighters were alerted in case they were required to assist with the operation.
St Mary’s firefighters used the aerial ladder to reach the cab and extinguish the fire before monitoring its temperature until it had cooled to a safe temperature.
Firefighters began to leave the scene at around 6pm having handed the incident back to the onsite team.
