Bedroom blaze sparked by mirror reflecting sunlight onto curtains

Sunlight refracting off of a mirror onto a curtain is believed to have sparked a blaze which damaged a Farnborough bedroom last weekend.

This acts as an important reminder to ensure that any glass ornaments and mirrors aren’t left near windows where they could catch and magnify the sun’s rays and burn soft furnishings in your home.

Firefighters from Rushmoor and Surrey FRS were alerted to the incident on Salisbury Road at around 6pm on Saturday.

Fortunately, there were no casualties involved as reports of smoke issuing from the first-floor bedroom came into the HIWFRS Control Room.

Wearing breathing apparatus, firefighters entered the property to extinguish the fire using hose reels, before clearing smoke, which had caused significant damage to the bedroom, with ventilation fans.

Before leaving the scene at around seven o’clock, firefighters checked for signs of fire spread, and conducted a home fire safety visit with the homeowners.
