Alongside their time with us they have been undertaking a college course which culminates in a presentation and interview focusing on their skills acquired through their placement.
Our current apprentices joined in September 2024 and have spent time in different areas of the organisation, working with teams focusing on property, equipment, data and more.
The variety of the role was something which appealed to James Herbert when he first applied back in July 2024. As James approaches the end of his apprenticeship, he has already sorted his future with the organisation, landing a role within the ICT team. He said:
“I’ve been with HIWFRS for nearly two years now, spending time with several different departments, working within ICT, property and data teams.
“Having been trusted and given the freedom to work on my own independent projects, this role has helped me develop both personally and professionally, whilst making new connections and good friends along the way.
“I am delighted to be staying in the organisation having applied and secured a Junior Project Manager role within ICT.
“I am now supporting the recruitment process of our next Corporate Services Apprentices, and I’d say to anyone considering applying for this unique role; grab the opportunity with both hands, don’t take it for granted as the time goes by very quickly, ask lots of questions, and trust your own ability.”
The invaluable support provided by mentors, managers and colleagues was something echoed by fellow apprentice Ellen Hawksworth, who is also set to stay on with the organisation. She said:
“The apprenticeship has helped me to improve my communication, organisation and problem-solving skills, and has given me confidence in working with colleagues, suppliers and stakeholders from a variety of backgrounds.
“Some of my highlights have been working on the Capital Estates Programme, taking part in equipment trials, and learning about the important roles different departments play, including the fire investigation dogs!
“I am excited to begin the next stage of my career, developing my skills further and taking on new challenges as a Junior Project Manager within the fire service’s Operational Assets team.”
Following the success of the programme, the Service is in the process of recruiting another pair of apprentices to follow the same pathway.

“Our apprentices have added great value to our teams and delivered real impactful work for our organisation.
“I am really pleased that both apprentices have managed to secure a permanent role within the Service, showing how successful this initiative has been.
“Following its success, we are proud to be able to continue offering this scheme, allowing us to support and develop individuals within our community that are looking to experience a Corporate Services role, whilst working towards a qualification.”
The programme sees our apprentices spend time working within the five Corporate Service’s departments, and supporting projects which will help them gain their Level 4 Associate Project Manager qualification.
