We are encouraging Hampshire and Isle of Wight residents to take simple steps now to reduce the risk of chimney fires as part of Chimney Fire Safety Week (1-7 September 2026).
Over the past six years, firefighters have attended 564 chimney fires across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. While the number of incidents has fallen in recent years, unchecked chimneys continue to pose a risk to homes and families every year.
With colder weather approaching and many people preparing to light wood-burning stoves, open fires and other solid fuel appliances for the first time this season, we want to remind our community not to overlook essential chimney maintenance.
A build-up of soot, tar and debris can increase the risk of a chimney fire, particularly after periods of disuse. Having your chimney swept regularly and ensuring appliances are used safely can help prevent fires.
Top tips to reduce the risk of a chimney fire
- Sweep your chimney before use if it has not been used for some time.
- Always use a fireguard in front of an open fire.
- Consider using a spark guard to prevent embers escaping.
- Extinguish fires before going to bed or leaving the house.
- Never use petrol or paraffin to light a fire.
- Make sure you have a working carbon monoxide alarm.
If you experience a chimney fire, dial 999 immediately and ask for the Fire Service.
