The exercise tested HIWFRS high rise procedure in a realistic environment. It involved a simulated fire on the  9th Floor of Mill Gate House in Portsmouth.

To test the procedures, fire hose lines were set up on the 9th floor and the floor below and teams in breathing apparatus checked the stairwells for smoke ingress (no real or cosmetic smoke was used).

Five fire engines and the aerial platform were involved in the exercise with associated officers and other role players.

The exercise was run with the National Fire Chiefs Council.

Mark Hodges, Content and Learning Manager at NFCC said: “The NFCC are grateful for Hampshire & Isle of Wight FRS creating an opportunity to apply the principles of National Operational Learning to a live incident. The ability to review National Operational Guidance based policies based on real incidents and exercises is vital to ensure our guidance remains effective. It was extremely helpful to see how well Hampshire have embedded principles of Stairwell Protection.”
