Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service

This Volunteers’ Week we are celebrating the fantastic contribution our wonderful volunteers make in communities across Hampshire and Isle of Wight.  We currently have over 100 volunteers ranging in age from 18 to over 80! Men and women with varied backgrounds from all sections of the community with one common goal – a shared desire to actively support and give back to their community.

Community Volunteer Robert James aged 84 has been volunteering with HIWFRS for over 4 years now.

With an impressive career history that includes 12 years in the Air force, 10 years in the army and 35 years as an NHS Fire Safety advisor, Robert has brought his wealth of experience and knowledge to the Service. Robert’s passion and enthusiasm for his role and his dedication to helping others really shines through.

One thing Robert loves about his volunteering role is the variety of tasks he’s been able to assist with. From promoting Safe and Wells (our home fire safety visits) to attending community events and station open days, Robert has supported our community and we are thankful for his time and valued contribution.

Since last year, Robert has also taken part in several joint patrols with Forestry England’s Park Rangers, joining forces with other members of the Service and volunteers to raise public awareness of the dangers of wildfires, and the damage these can do to wildlife and the landscape.

Robert admits the patrols have been a particular highlight:

“I’ve enjoyed chatting to members of the public during the patrols and educating them on the risks barbecues and campfires in the New Forest can cause to safety and the environment.”

When asked about the difference volunteering makes, Robert’s motivation is clear.

“There is a public need for fire safety advice. Fire Service personnel are so busy that they can’t be everywhere, so volunteers help to give the fire service a presence in the community – we act as representatives.”

A shining example, Robert clearly gets a lot of satisfaction from his volunteer role. In his own words, “being part of a team gives me a sense of community. It’s a chance to meet some great people, help others and learn new skills at the same time.”

Would he recommend volunteering to others?

“I would absolutely recommend volunteering to others.Volunteering in any role or organisation would be a great benefit to our country.”
