How long have you been volunteering with the Service?
2 years
What inspired you to volunteer with HIWFRS?
“It started quite by chance. During a local festival, I found a stationary fire engine on the high street. What caught my attention was not the vehicle itself, but the crew, who were introducing the families to the different tools. It was wonderful to see how they warmly engaged with the local community. I always enjoy roles where I can connect with people and genuinely make a difference. That experience motivated me to sign up as a volunteer for HIWFRS.”
Can you tell us more about your volunteer role? What activities have you been involved in?
“My volunteering journey began at an open day in Basingstoke Fire Station, where I handed out leaflets and spoke with visitors about their awareness of home fire safety.
A little later, I found myself back at the station where I supported a recruitment open day by guiding candidates through different areas. It gave me a rare and fascinating glimpse into the inner workings of a fire station.
Earlier this year, I joined fellow volunteers at a Lunar New Year celebration and even had the chance to take part in the lion dance! We also distributed hundreds of leaflets about the “Your Service, Your Say” initiative and Home Fire Safety Visits. The event was incredibly well-received by both the organiser and the public.
What’s your favourite thing about volunteering?
“For me, as someone new to the area, the opportunity to connect with local people is undeniably the most rewarding part of volunteering in the Service. It feels like I am taking small steps to settle into this new chapter of my life. I may be giving my time, but what I receive in return is far more valuable: smiles, kind words, and moments of appreciation all stay with me. I know these experiences will become some of the most cherished memories when I look back on them in the future.”
Are there any highlights that stand out?
“One of my unforgettable moments was supporting the Residents’ Life Fair at the University of Southampton. The students showed great interest in our kitchen safety leaflets, eagerly picking them up as they visited our booth. It was a day filled with laughter, positive energy, and lovely interactions.”
What would you say to anyone who is thinking about volunteering with HIWFRS?
“HIWFRS is like a big family. Everyone is exceptionally supportive, professional, and respectful. You will be welcomed on board while learning essential fire safety tips. You might even surprise yourself with how much you enjoy it once you wear the uniform.”
Anything else you’d like to add?
“Volunteering for the Service is a rewarding experience that gives me the chance to learn more about what happens behind the scenes, from day-to-day operations to much more. It makes me feel valued and even more excited to continue my journey as a volunteer.”
