A garage blaze in Arreton was tackled by island crews overnight

We were first alerted shortly after two o’clock this morning, with teams from Newport, Shanklin, Sandown, Ryde and Cowes called to the scene on Hopkins Walk.

The garage was well alight, with the fire beginning to spread to neighbouring properties, when firefighters first arrived.

Nearby residents were advised to keep doors and windows closed due to the smoke in the area.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus sets worked to remove gas cylinders from the partially collapsed garage.

One nearby vehicle suffered damage from heat and fallen debris, but fortunately, there were no casualties from the blaze, which was extinguished using hose reels and jets.
