Firefighters tackle large straw bale fire in West Tytherley
West Tytherley Fire – Site Reinspection (10 August)
A reinspection of the West Tytherley fire site took place this afternoon, with a number of hotspots were identified and extinguished by crews.
Firefighters will return to the site this evening to carry out further inspections and ensure the area remains safe.
West Tytherley fire – evening update (9 August)
As the incident continued into the evening, a relief strategy was put in place to allow crews to rotate and maintain firefighting operations.
The fire, which involved approximately 40 hectares of straw and grass, was successfully extinguished at around 9pm this evening.
A reinspection of the site is planned for tomorrow morning to ensure there are no remaining hotspots or risk of the fire reigniting.
A huge thank you to the local farmers and community for their support and assistance, and to all the firefighters and supporting crews for their hard work in challenging hot conditions.
West Tytherley Fire – Initial Incident Update (9 August)
Firefighters were called to West Tytherley shortly after 2:30pm this afternoon following reports of a large fire involving straw bales.
More than 50 firefighters from across Hampshire attended the incident, working alongside crews from Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Services to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading. Local farmers have also been using agricultural machinery to create firebreaks around the affected area, supporting firefighters’ efforts to bring the fire under control.
The fire is now surrounded, with crews damping down the affected area. Operations are now scaling down, although firefighters will remain at the scene to monitor the situation and ensure the fire does not escalate.
Some smoke may remain visible in the area as the affected straw is allowed to burn out.
Local residents are advised to keep windows and doors closed while smoke remains in the area.
