Since the rescue was tweeted, the story has been herd by audiences from ITV, Metro, Radio 1, Daily Echo, and the Baa-fast Telegraph.
Two-year-olds Yum Yum and Tasty are pets belonging to animal lover Abi Schoenmakers from Holbury. Having always lived around the New Forest, Abi got the pair as lambs and is adamant they make adorable pets and great lawnmowers.
Abi said,
“it’s bizarre having a famous sheep just because he’s a bit too woolly and a bit too big around the tummy.
“He was just stuck, and I had no idea what to do. I didn’t want to bother anyone for what seemed like a silly problem.
“I can’t thank the Animal Rescue Team enough for coming out to us.”
The HFRS Animal Rescue Team are no strangers to animals getting into outlandish situations; from lizards in lightbulbs to a donkey in a swimming pool. Large animal rescues are recognised as one of the most dangerous activities. The larger species more commonly rescued are horses, cattle, sheep, and deer that find themselves trapped in machinery, rivers, and ditches.
On this pasture, curiosity had gotten the better of Yum Yum when he became wedged between the wooden heap and fence. When Abi found Yum Yum, pushing and shoving him proved to be unsuccessful.
With the wet weather that has been hitting the south coast recently, Yum Yum’s legs were getting stuck in the mud from trying to get himself out.
“Perhaps they were playing hide and seek”, Abi suggested. As lambs, Yum Yum and Tasty would play around the garden. Being smaller, they had never come into trouble with the gap there before.
Using a carry sheet, the Animal Rescue Advisers were able to loop the sheet underneath Yum Yum’s torso and man-ewe-ally lift him up and out from his predicament.
Owner Abi was pleased to share that Yum Yum was left in mint condition after the rescue – with the gap now bordered up – and has since been hitting the hay again with best friend Tasty.
