Annabelle and Lauren joined five other cadets from around the country as they participated in the five-day programme ran in conjunction with the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) Fire Cadets.

Setting off during February half-term, the cadets visited the Swedish Fire Angel base where they faced the task of navigating a blisteringly cold polar environment.

Basingstoke cadet watch manager, Annabelle said:

“I want to say a massive thank you to George and Bex and the leaders for giving me this life changing opportunity and all your support.

“It was incredible to spend time with such inspirational women in the fire service.

“It’s taught me to keep going when things get tough and to believe in myself more.

“I have so many amazing memories such as seeing the Northern Lights, sleeping in a tent outside in minus 25 degrees, husky sledging, pulling pulks, making new friends and much more.”

HIWFRS Fire Cadet Manager Clair Hayward said:

“We are so proud of both Annabelle and Lauren for taking on this huge challenge, where they put themselves well outside of their comfort zones.

“We closely followed and supported their journey from the initial selection, the intense training and fundraising periods, before the expedition itself.

“We were so excited to hear all about their adventure when they returned.

“The accomplishments of both Annabelle and Lauren demonstrate how the Fire Cadets programme can help you to grow and develop yourself in ways you never would have thought of.”

Training for the mission began back in September, when the cadets learnt how to pitch tents expedition style, prepare meals whilst camping and learning top tips to keep warm.

The Fire Angel programme aims to empower young people by offering them a chance to take part in unique training, mentorship and role modelling.

The programme was created by firefighters Rebecca Openshaw-Rowe from Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service and Georgina Gilbert from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service after they completed a pioneering expedition, skiing to the South Pole, unsupported and unguided.

The Antarctic Fire Angels founded the programme, with those who took part, raising funds for the charity, whose mission is ‘to nurture talent in young people to become creative, ambitious, inspiring and innovative leaders of tomorrow.’

The duo have several fundraising events planned in with Eastleigh cadet watch manager Lauren planning to abseil 100m down the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth.

Lauren said:

“I am grateful to have this opportunity as I know I will really benefit from the trip. I will learn leadership, resilience and selflessness in putting the needs of my team above my own. These experiences and skills will help me throughout my whole life.
