Vehicle Fires

Every year, we respond to over 600 vehicle fires, and we understand how frightening that experience can be, especially if it happens while you’re driving. 

The good news is, there are simple things you can do to lower the risk. And if the worst does happen, we’re here to help you stay safe. 

We hope you never have to face a car fire. But just in case, here’s what you should do to protect yourself and others: 

1. Stay calm – it’s easier said than done but keeping a clear head will help you stay safe. 
2. Put your hazard lights on to alert other drivers. 
3. Pull over as soon as it’s safe to do so – away from traffic if possible. 
4. Turn your wheels, apply the handbrake, and switch off the engine to prevent the car from moving. 
5. Release the bonnet using the lever inside your car – but don’t touch or open it. The fire may be underneath. 
6. Get everyone out of the vehicle and move well away – ideally behind a barrier or to a safe spot off the road. 
7. Make yourself visible – wear high-vis clothing if you have it and use your arms or a torch to warn others. 
8. Call 999 and ask for the fire service. Let them know exactly where you are. If you can, use the What3Words app to help pinpoint your location. 

Most of the car fires we attend could have been prevented with regular maintenance. That’s why we always encourage drivers to: 

• Keep up with your vehicle’s servicing and MOT. This is your first line of defence. 

• Do a quick check before every journey. It only takes a minute to check your oil, coolant, and tyre condition. 

• Don’t ignore dashboard warning lights. They’re your early warning system – they’re there for a reason. 

• Look (and smell!) out for anything unusual – like burning smells, smoke, or strange noises.
