Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service

A group of six new on-call firefighters graduated from their initial training course this week.

Spending the last few weeks out on the Service Headquarters drill yard the latest recruits have been honing their ladder and hose techniques as part of a training course known as a Mod A.

The on-call firefighters will now be able to join their local crew jumping on the fire engine and responding to incidents.

The Learning and Development team will welcome the firefighters back at a later date to continue their development and train them in breathing apparatus and medical practices.

The latest graduation means that we have seen more than 30 new on-call firefighters welcomed into the Service in 2025.

But we’re still looking for more – if you think you could do your bit to help your local community as an on-call firefighter, why not?

“We have now welcomed and trained more than 30 on-call firefighters into the Service this year.

“This means our teams across Hampshire and Isle of Wight have been boosted with more firefighters to help make life safer within our communities.

“Our trainers have designed and delivered another programme of learning to develop our newest recruits who have shown incredible dedication to pursue an exciting new career.

“We are in the process of enhancing our initial training courses for on-call recruits, with an updated development programme set to be announced in the coming months.”
