Temperatures remain high as crews tackle outdoor fires
As the hot weather across the country persists, our teams have continued to work incredibly hard in challenging conditions to keep Hampshire and Isle of Wight safe.
Find out more about some of the calls we attended yesterday:
- Southampton firefighters were called to a fire involving grassland shortly after midday (pictured). Our Control room received more than 45 emergency calls reporting the fire, which crossed Romsey Road in Southampton, before it was put out. One crew returned later to carry out a reinspection and check for remaining hotspots.
- Two tractors and 25 acres of crops were destroyed in Nether Wallop. Hampshire crews worked alongside Dorset and Wiltshire FRS to surround and contain the blaze before it was extinguished using hose reel jets and farming equipment.
- In Tangley, near Andover, approximately 30 acres of crops were destroyed. The blaze was creating a lot of smoke and crews extinguished the fire before handing the incident back to the land owner.
- Police closed the road to allow around 25 firefighters to use high-pressure hose reels to extinguish a fire in a field of crops off Kiln Road in Fareham shortly after 3pm.
- Crews put out a fire involving approximately 30 acres of stubble in a field in Medstead, near Alton.
- Forestry Commission rangers worked alongside firefighters to tackle a woodland fire in Farnham.
- A field fire spread to hedgerows, with approximately nine hectares of land involved in a blaze off Hinton Manor Lane, Horndean. Crews used beaters and jets to surround and extinguish the fire, with more than 35 firefighters involved in the incident.
- Firefighters tackled a large fire on Peartree Green in Southampton shortly before 5pm yesterday afternoon. The 300m-by-300m area of grassland affected was extinguished using jets and hose reels. Crews liaised with National Rail officers due to the fire’s proximity to the train line. The stop message came in at 9pm.
- One fire engine will return this morning to conduct a reinspection checking for remaining hotspots.
- Crews in the north of Hampshire were called to a large heathland fire on Wellesley Road in Aldershot shortly before 9pm.
- Portsmouth firefighters were sent to a large area of undergrowth alight on Eastern Road. Control room operators took around 20 emergency calls reporting the blaze.
- A crew from Ryde tackled two bonfires on the beach late last night.
- Ventnor firefighters dampened down a small cliff top fire this morning after being alerted by members of the public.
