Multiple crews spend the night tackling Ventnor fire

Firefighters worked through the night to tackle a fire at a derelict building on Ventnor Esplanade.

Crews were called shortly before 6pm on Tuesday (7 June) and arrived to find the old arcade building well alight.

People living nearby were asked to stay inside and keep windows closed due to the presence of heavy smoke, but no buildings had to be evacuated, with crews working hard to prevent the fire from spreading.

Shanklin, Ventnor, Sandown, Ryde, Newport, Cowes, Freshwater and East Cowes were in attendance and firefighters used the aerial ladder, main jets and hose reel jets to tackle the fire.

A relief strategy was put in place overnight, with Hampshire crews sent to assist at the incident and maintain fire cover across the Island.

By 3am the fire was out and crews were dampening down, but the whole of the building has been affected.

Two fire engines remain on scene with an investigation due to start later this morning to try and establish the cause.

UPDATE: The stop message was received shortly before 8am. One fire engine is expected to remain on scene throughout the morning to continue dampening down.
