More than 40 firefighters on the scene of university building fire in Southampton

Around 40 firefighters from across Southampton and Eastleigh were called to a fire within a university building on European Way earlier this morning.

Crews from St Mary’s, Redbridge, Hightown and Eastleigh were alerted at 11:33 after smoke was reported on the ground floor.

The building has been evacuated with no injuries reported.

The fire involving batteries linked to the power supply was extinguished before crews worked to clear smoke from the premises and liaised with the building’s responsible person to maintain critical services.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used jets, hose reels, fire extinguishers and ventilation fans.

The batteries were isolated and removed from the building before the stop message came in at 16:16.
