Fox cub rescued from deep pit at Southampton Docks

A fox was discovered to have fallen into a pit on the Southern Water site at Southampton Docks on Monday afternoon.

The tank, in which the young cub was trapped, was in danger of flooding if it rained, so an HIWFRS Animal Rescue Advisor attended the scene along with RSPCA officers.

Due to the location of the animal and the depth of the tank, the teams collaborated and lowered a humane trap to encourage the fox into an area that wasn’t at risk of flooding, before it was lifted to safety on Tuesday morning.

The cub was checked over by the RSPCA and released without harm.

HIWFRS Animal Rescue Advisor, Mark Compton said:

“We worked closely with the RSPCA officers and Southern Water teams on the scene to reach and recover the fox.”

“This young cub was in a confined position and we were concerned of its safety due to the risk of flooding.”

“It’s always a pleasing outcome when we’re able to rescue an animal and see it released unharmed.”
