Firefighters extinguish kitchen blaze within student accommodation block
Shortly before 6pm yesterday, crews from St Mary’s, Redbridge and Eastleigh were alerted to the fire on Glen Eyre Road, Southampton.
Smoke was issuing from the first-floor kitchen when firefighters arrived on scene.
Wearing breathing apparatus, firefighters were able to enter the kitchen and using hose reel jets, extinguish the blaze caused by combustible materials left atop the hob.
Ventilation fans were then used to clear smoke from the premises before crews returned to station at around half six.
Our Recipe for Success COOK campaign simplifies kitchen safety for Southampton residents with our easy to remember list of ingredients:
- CLEAR – Keep tea towels, cloths and electrical leads away from the oven and hob.
- OVEN – Switch off the oven and hob when you’ve finished cooking and remove pans from the heat.
- OIL – A build-up of cooking oil/grease can increase the risk of cooking fires so clean regularly.
- KEEP – Keep looking when cooking.
