A lithium-ion battery exploded last night in a Portsmouth home, prompting warnings of safe charging.

In the blast, part the device was fired into a wall in the next room.

Southsea crews were alerted to the property on Twyford Avenue, shortly before 9pm.

The fire was out by the time firefighters arrived on scene, with the battery, which was used to charge a portable electric light, removed to the garden and submerged in water.

Firefighters treated one casualty before passing them into the care of South Central Ambulance Service paramedics.

A home fire safety check of the property was conducted before firefighters returned to station at around half nine.

Fires caused by lithium-ion batteries are increasing. To stay safe, always choose trusted electronic products, handle them correctly, and dispose of them responsibly.
