Chemical spill made safe by Portsmouth fire crews

A chemical spill at a commercial premises in Portsmouth was made safe by firefighters earlier today.

Crews from Cosham, Southsea and Portchester were called at around half one this afternoon, and were supported by specialist hazmat teams from Winchester and Romsey.

Paramedics treated a number of casualties who reported mild inhalation of chemical fumes, whilst local residents were advised to close windows and doors.

Police officers were on the scene to close Gladys Avenue as firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus, worked to investigate and contain the spillage.

After testing the area with gas monitoring equipment, the incident was handed back to onsite staff and the safety cordons withdrawn.

HIWFRS left the scene at around half three.
