Candle sparks flat fire in Ventnor

On-call firefighters from Shanklin and Sandown were alerted at around half seven yesterday evening to tackle a flat fire in Dudley Road, Ventnor.

The fire is believed to have been started by a candle in the flat which was quickly evacuated.

Crews arrived to find flames and smoke issuing from the first-floor bedroom.

The blaze was extinguished by firefighters in breathing apparatus using hose reels and jets.

The electrics to the building were isolated as the crews used thermal imaging cameras to check hot spots.

The flat suffered significant damage from both fire and smoke.

HIWFRS left the scene following the stop message at 21:34.
