The annual event was held this year in Puerto del Carmen in Lanzarote, with HIWFRS represented by Rob Barrow and Steve Morris with support from Charlie Turnbull.
The team were the winners of the Complex Scenario event, and came third in the overall scores – a brilliant result which will see them return to the UK as the third best team in the world.
Watch Manager Rob Barrow said:
“We are delighted to be competing in the Trauma event at the World Rescue Challenge in Lanzarote, representing Hampshire and Isle of Wight.
“The challenge involves a medical scenario, which will see us assess, manoeuvre, and treat a casualty with life-threatening injuries, before our performance is scored and evaluated.
Watch Manager Charlie Turnbull said:
“The main objective of the Trauma challenge is to help develop the initial treatment and medical skills of emergency rescue workers.
“The event provides a great opportunity to share ideas and techniques with teams from across the globe, so we can take the learning back to our organisations, helping to save lives at real incidents.”
The team came joint first in last year’s United Kingdom Rescue Organisation’s (UKRO) Festival of Rescue event in the West Midlands, securing their opportunity to showcase their skills on the international stage.
Next year the HIWFRS Extrication team will compete after finishing third in this year’s UKRO event in Lincolnshire.
The team were reunited with the South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service extrication team, who had visited our headquarters in Eastleigh last week.
The South Australian team’s time in Eastleigh allowed firefighters from both sides of the world the opportunity to share learning and exchange different extrication techniques, as well as rope rescue skills.
Their visit was part of the recent exchange programme that saw HIWFRS firefighters head down under earlier this year.
The trip saw a HIWFRS team scoop a trio of awards at the Australasian Rescue Challenge, the equivalent competition to UKRO.
